Featured Tip

Finding "level" is probably the most important part of building your rink.  You MUST have 3" of ice to hold an average adult, so you need to ensure that the "shallow" area has at least 3" of water.

When to flood? PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 14 February 2007

The next thing you need to consider is when to put in the liner (if you are using one) and flood the rink.  You don't want to do this too early or you'll be fishing stuff out of the rink all the time.

You want to watch the weather forcast and look for a stretch of 4 days that the nightitme temps are below freezing and the daytime temps are not much higher than freezing.  It takes roughly 4 days to make the needed 3" of ice to support an adult.  http://www.weather.com/ and http://www.accuweather.com/ are two great sites you can go to to get long range forcasts for your area.

If you flood too early you will end up with debris in the rink which will have to be fished out before the ice forms or it will come back to haunt you later.

When you put in the liner DO NOT staple or nail it to your boards yet.  Drape it over the boards and try to straighten it so that it hugs the boards.  Fill the rink and allow the liner to flex and stretch.  Once your rink is full you can nail, staple or clamp it in place.  Doing this ensures that you do not tear the liner from the pressure of the water.
