My Rink Journals

I decided to keep a journal of my rink, so I can look back after 10 or more years and remember a little bit about each year we had the rink up and in use. I am sure some of the years will be less eventful than others, but here they are...

Welcome Season 6!!!

Unfortunately season 6 started late, but not as late as season 5. The frame went up on December 11 and the liner went in December 20. After last years mess with the liner one would have thought that I would have purchased my liner in September, but I didn't due to budgetary issues. I called The Tarp & Cover Superstore and discovered they were yet again out of stock for the size I needed. As I was NOT going to go the route I did last year, I called J. Freeman in Dorchester, MA and they had a roll that I could use. Unfortunately it was a 40x100 and all I really need is a 40x50.

So, I bought the 40x100 roll and crossed my fingers that this wasn't going to be a repeat of last years mess. Turns out the roll was in perfect shape and was holding water as expected. The fill started December 20 and by Christmas day I had 2 inches of ice. WOOHOO!

December 26 brought a blizzard and 22 inches of snow down onto my 2 inches of ice. OH NO!!!! No way to shovel it, so I watched as the snow turned to slush. I also watched my 8 inches of exposed boards shrink to 1 inch. The next few days were rather warm and as things started to melt a bit I discovered the blizzard had scattered branches and twigs all over the rink and left craters in the ice as the snow fell from the branches and landed on the surface.

I mentioned to my wife that the rink would look better surrounded by snow, looking more like a pond than a man-made structure. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!! We had more snow the weekend of January 8th-9th, but it didn't accumulate much. The storm on the 12th however brought us another 20 inches of snow. I was able to get the snowblower onto the rink to get rid of the slushy mess. I now have 5-6 inches of boards all around thanks to the heavy snow pushing the ice down and soaking up the excess water. I am pretty sure the rink is frozen solid at this point. More snow today (January 18th), but will turn to rain (so they say).

The winter party will be early this year due to cheerleading competitions, but the weather looks good right now.
